It is usually characterized by difficulty concentrating, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, and restlessness. Fortunately, help is out there for those affected by ADHD. Causes of ADHD
While the exact cause of ADHD is unknown, there are some potential factors that could contribute to its development. Fortunately, recognizing the root causes of ADHD has opened up many treatment options, such as medications that work to address neurotransmitter deficiencies or dietary therapies aimed at boosting their production or availability.
One potential factor in the development of ADHD is genetics. Studies have shown that the disorder tends to run in families and that siblings with ADHD are more likely than their peers to also have it. This suggests that certain genetic factors could be at play when it comes to ADHD. It should be noted, however, that genetics are not thought to be the only cause of ADHD; rather they are thought to play a role in its development along with other environmental or developmental factors.
The structure and functioning of brain cells may also contribute to the development of ADHD. Research has found differences in brain activity between people with and without the disorder. For example, people with ADHD tend to have higher levels of activity in certain areas of the brain associated with attention and emotion regulation than those without the disorder.
Additionally, disruption of the neurotransmitter (brain messengers) system can manifest as certain symptoms related to ADHD. Research suggests that people with ADHD have an imbalance of dopamine and norepinephrine transporters, which contribute to problems with attention, focus, impulsivity, and emotional regulation.
Environmental factors such as exposure to toxins or stress during pregnancy may also contribute to the development of ADHD. Studies suggest that exposure to toxins such as lead or mercury can lead to changes in behavior similar to those seen in people with ADHD.
Additionally, research has found a link between maternal stress during pregnancy and an increased risk for developing attention problems later on in life. While these environmental factors may not always directly cause ADHD, they can increase a person’s susceptibility for developing it later on in life if other risk factors are present, as well.
