Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive compulsive disorder, better known as OCD, is an anxiety disorder that affects over 2 million people in the United States alone. It is characterized by persistent intrusive thoughts, unwanted images, and recurring behavior patterns that can be difficult to control.
At Psyhance, we understand the challenges that OCD poses to those who suffer from it and strive to create an understanding atmosphere for our patients. Our telepsychiatry approach allows us to provide innovative, holistic treatment plans tailored to individual needs from afar. Our experienced mental health professionals are dedicated to helping our clients manage their OCD symptoms and work towards recovery goals.
What is OCD?
OCD can be defined as a mental health condition characterized by two key components: obsessions and compulsions. People with OCD experience obsessive thoughts or images that cause intense fear or distress. These obsessions often center on themes such as contamination, orderliness, harm or aggression towards oneself or others, religiosity, and sexuality. In response to these obsessive thoughts, individuals may engage in compulsive behaviors such as handwashing, counting items or repeating words to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsessions.
Symptoms of OCD
The symptoms of OCD can vary from person to person but generally include both obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Common symptoms include excessive cleaning rituals (such as washing hands), hoarding items for fear of needing them later, checking locks or appliances multiple times a day for fear of harm coming to oneself or someone else, and repeating words or phrases in one's head repeatedly for fear of something bad happening if they stop saying it. Other common symptoms include perfectionism (needing everything to look a certain way) and difficulty making decisions due to worries about making the wrong choice.
