Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental illness that can significantly disrupt an individual’s life. However, integrative psychiatry has made great strides in treating this condition. With integrative psychiatry, practitioners utilize evidence-based psychotherapies, medication management, and lifestyle modifications to establish a holistic approach to schizophrenia treatment.
At Psyhance, integrative psychiatry is the main approach used to manage schizophrenia. This innovative method combines supplements, psychotherapy, and other evidenced-based therapies to provide optimal care for clients suffering from this disorder.
Types of Schizophrenia
There are several different types of schizophrenia that can affect people in different ways. These include paranoid, disorganized, catatonic, residual, undifferentiated schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder.
Paranoia type schizophrenia is associated with hallucinations and/or delusions involving persecution or grandiose beliefs. People living with this type may exhibit suspiciousness, guardedness, and hostility towards others, as well as difficulty understanding social cues.
Treatment for paranoia type schizophrenia typically involves antipsychotic medications, as well as talk therapy. The goal of talking therapy is to identify patterns in thoughts and behavior, so individuals can learn more productive ways to cope with their symptoms.
Catatonic type schizophrenia is marked by unusual motor behaviors such as mutism, stupor, posturing, echolalia (repeating the words of others), echopraxia (mimicking others’ movements), rigidity, negativism (resisting instructions), and waxy flexibility (limbs remaining fixed in abnormal positions).
Treatments for catatonic schizophrenic may include antipsychotics or benzodiazepines, as well as nutritional supplementation to address any underlying deficiencies that may be contributing to symptoms. Additionally, supportive psychotherapy can be helpful in managing behaviors associated with catatonia.
Undifferentiated type schizophrenia refers to an individual who meets all criteria for a diagnosis but does not fit into either of the other categories mentioned above. Those living with undifferentiated type may experience both positive symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions along with negative symptoms such as social withdrawal and lack of motivation.
Treatment for undifferentiated type typically includes antipsychotic medications combined with psychosocial interventions, such as family therapy or supported employment services.
Schizoaffective disorder is a rare mental health condition that is a combination of schizophrenia and mood disorders, such as mania or depression. Symptoms typically consist of significant changes in mood, disorganized thoughts, difficulty with relationships, and auditory hallucinations.
